1st Winter Event of the 2013/14 season – Update

Update from Winter Control Staff

A significant cold from has moved in from the North-West bringing with it snow flurries this morning. After experiencing rain yesterday, temperatures dropped suddenly to -10C overnight causing the ambient road temperatures to drop accordingly. Staff have been monitoring the weather diligently and plans are in place to deal with these events.

Last night staff applied material to bridge decks in the City (they ice up first), and then this morning approximately 1 cm of snow accumulated on the ground. Given the road temperatures, the chance of ice forming was great, so a decision was made to bring additional staff on ovetime to apply material to the arterial and collector roads to ensure safe driving conditions.

This has been a limited and measured response to the event. Public Works have not received any media enquires at this time. Staff will continue to monitor the situation and take action as necessary. Finally, if the situation changes, updates will be sent out. Staff
