THE FRIENDS OF THE GUELPH PUBLIC LIBRARY PRESENT…
“ZUMBA IN THE POOL WITH CARLOS!”
The Friends of the Guelph Public Library proudly present the staged premiere of the 90-minute comedy, Zumba in the Pool with Carlos, written by Friends member Mary Mulholland. Everyone is invited to watch this play starring GPL’s CEO Kitty Pope and a mystery cast of talented local ladies on Wednesday, February 8th at 7:00 PM at the Main Branch Library (100 Norfolk Street).
Seven women meet in the change room of a fitness club for an aqua Zumba class led by a sexy young instructor. Over the course of a year, they discuss the details of their lives, share their troubles and triumphs and bond. Hilarity reigns as they go over the top preparing for a zumba video taping and their fifteen minutes of fame! See you there!

Try hitting a serious pot hole and worrying about your alignment and suspension from a safety perspective. Then read this useless garbage.
[Garbage! There's another trigger!!!!!]
Does KP have a conflict of interest here in terms of salary continuation?
You mean if we get rid of libraries all the pot holes will go away. Well I’ll be damned.
Don – go to Google Books to find out what’s already free. Or take advantage of the public library sites we already have across the city. Or use the vast holdings of our University’s library, complete with borrowing privileges at several other excellent facilities.
If it’s public meeting space you want, explore what’s already paid for and available upon request – like primary and secondary schools after hours. Or the newly renovated public museum, that will have plenty of unused rooms every evening.
Ask the City Library folks to do a study of their circulation system to identify little-used hard copy materials that could be stored elsewhere, thereby freeing up space in existing facilities.
Then go for a drive around town and tell us where best to spend your precious, limited tax dollars.
There are “need to have” and “nice to have” expenditures. Some people don’t see the distinction. Socialism works well – until you run out of other people’s tax dollars. It’s either pot holes to be filled OR nice to have amenities. Unfortunatly, we can’t afford both.

My recollection is that after Mike Harris and company were through with the education funding formula there was a considerable uproar because the various classes, meetings, groups etc that used the public school buildings disappeared because user fees were required to pay for custodial services.
The Guelph Public Library circulation figures are public knowledge and I have seen them.
In any case a volunteer citizens group who happens to believe that the public library is an important part of the process of learning literacy and creativity give up their time for free to support the library. They run the sale of donated books to fund the library and manage other library fund raising efforts. They do other things as well which promote literacy and learning. In that light one of them went to all the trouble of writing a play and the rest of them are making the effort to perform it. They do work for the community for free. For that you called their efforts “useless garbage”. You ought to be ashamed of yourself and you owe them an apology.
Fees for renting otherwise empty school buildings are chicken feed when compared to what you and your colleagues plan to spend, including extra janitorial staff for maintenance. And there may not be any fees whatsoever associated with using other [as yet unpaid for] City facilities like the City Hall, the River Run Centre, Sleeman Centre or the newly renovated church-owned museum building.
If you’ve seen circulation figures, what if anything has anyone done with them. About 20 years ago, the U of G Library did similar studies and wisely rented annex space to house obselete holdings. Request an annexed holding and you’ll have it in hand within 24 hours. Reply please.
“In any case a volunteer citizens group who happens to believe that the public library is an important part of the process of learning literacy and creativity give up their time for free to support the library.” What if anything is this group doing to cultivate remaining areas of freedom and existing resources to support their worthwhile cause? Reply please.
Some things we genuinely need – other things we want at any expense.
And no, I won’t apologize for being logical when it comes to using fellow taxpayers’ hard earned dollars.

Did you bump your head when you hit the pot hole? They are not my colleagues. I have no connection to the library other than my library card.
I did not suggest you apologize for your logic but for your atrocious lack of manners. Whether or not you agree with what the friends of the library are trying to do, they are trying to do good and on their own time. They are volunteers who choose to try to do good for the benefit of others. I respect that. Maybe they won’t accomplish anything but I respect their motives and efforts.
You on the other hand attacked them personally because you happen to disagree with the result they are trying to achieve. You were very rude and I don’t respect the way you conduct yourself so I don’t consider you worthy of the argument.
Don – your comment above is well taken. I was rude. And I sincerely apologize for my reaction. I’m just so very frustrated with how public dollars are being managed – or not managed – by City “staff” and Council.
