Massage and Alternative Health Care Schedules to the business licensing by-law

In view of consulting with holistic practitioners, I would ad a comment or two.

I’d like to express my approval, appreciation and gratitude for the many hours of hard
work done thus far on this most difficult issue. I am very comfortable with the proposal
made at the March 17th meeting and would not have major concerns about anything
proposed there.

The diversity of the holstic community guarantees that there may always be minor concerns about specific requirements, but as I understand the spirit of what you are trying to do, a legitimate practitioner who doesn’t generate complaints is unlikely to be focused on and therefore these niggles are not what we need to focus on.

There was some discussion regarding the use of insurance coverage being able to help weed out inappropriate businesses. Most legitimate holistic/alternative practitioners will have liability insurance for their office/business and also malpractice insurance. Neither of these however,
would guarantee that a particular business is not offering body rub services.

As a sole practitioner who works from home, I need to retain the right to lock my premises as
needed-we do not leave our front door unlocked in our neighbourhood-one is likely to find that someone has walked off with the house if we weren’t on the main floor.

In an ideal world holistic practitioners wouldn’t need to separate themselves from the pack we have found ourselves in, and as “Atherton Drenth” objected to, defend ourselves. Unfortunately we operate in the real world. I have no objection to any reasonable means required by council to verify my legitimacy as a holistic practitioner, an alternative health care provider or whatever other term you’d like to call it. If you want a name badge with photo and that doesn’t fit my idea of an healing environment or mood then, I could have the badge and keep it handy-it doesn’t have to make a negative impact on my business. We need to keep focussed on the real problem here which is the proliferation of body rub parlors in our city and how to control them.

I wish you all good success in your work.     DH
