The City of Guelph is currently in the process of developing a Solid Waste Management Master Plan to guide the future of waste reduction, diversion and disposal in Guelph.
The process identifies municipal best practices, explores waste diversion programs and residual waste management options, and analyses and evaluates potential programs and initiatives to make long-term recommendations.

I attended the Guelph Solid Waste Management Master Plan Open House at the Cutten Club on February 21, 2008 with an open mind, many questions and what I thought were well thought out and researched common sense suggestions on how to deal with our waste. What I found was a very disappointing dog and pony show that was obviously put on to satisfy criteria requiring a public component rather than to truly get the public involved. There was no formal agenda, no formal Q&A period whereby attendee’s questions would be recorded and responded to. On more than one occasion, conflicting answers were given on the same question by different committee members. The lack of knowledge by those with name tags unfortunately gave me reason to believe that the open house was a staged performance to satisfy due diligence in the process. Although a large display was in place for the organic component of our waste stream, it was not part of the “master” plan. It became obvious when members of the “master” plan committee gave conflicting reasons why, including one representative that insisted it was. This solidified my belief that the rebuilding of the wet plant is a political objective regardless of economical, environmental and social concerns at the present site. My disappointment continued as I left the open house with an 11 question, Public Open House Exit Questionnaire that had very few real questions that I felt would contribute to the master plan process. On the plus side, there was plenty of food and drink available.
